Pomquet Acadian School
Pomquet Acadian School, located on Taylor's Road, offers an Acadian French First Language education from grades primary to twelve for students of Acadian and French descent. The school, along with 19 others from Sydney, Cape Breton to Wedgeport, Yarmouth County, is part of the Acadian School Board (Conseil Scolaire Acadian Provincial).
Pomquet Acadian School has an enrollment of over 200 students, with 19 teachers, a principal and a vice-principal. A program for preschoolers (Grandir en Français – "La Frimousse") within the school offers an introduction to the French language and Acadian culture. The program has a teacher and a teacher's aide, and follows the regular school schedule. Parents can opt to enroll their child full-time or part-time.
The school is equipped with a full-size gymnasium, cafeteria, music studio, library, and computer and technical labs (wood-working, food preparation, etc.).
A very active Home and School Association (Foyer-École) has been instrumental in acquiring funds for the purchase of educational materials, and recently, the purchase and installation of a new fitness cluster on school grounds.
Students at Pomquet Acadian School take part in the Jeux de l'Acadie each year. These games involve over 1000 Acadian school athletes from all Atlantic Provinces and are held in a different locale each year.
